C. Melchers GmbH & Co. was founded in 1806 by Anton Friedrich Carl Melchers as a private partnership. Foreign trade concentrated on North and Central America during the first 60 years, but gradually shifted to the Far East with the establishment of Melchers & Co., Hong Kong, in 1866. Today, in addition to the head office in Bremen, branch offices and associated companies have been established in Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Colombo, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Seoul, Bangkok, San Francisco, Cincinnati, Manila, Taipei, Saigon and Hanoi. C. Melchers GmbH & Co. engage in extensive international import and export activities. Specialized sales organizations in the Far East, in Germany, and other countries handle various lines of merchandise. As an old China hand C. Melchers GmbH & Co.'s trade with China is still a focal point of operations. Imports include raw materials and manufactured goods whilst exports are mainly complete plants, machinery, and material for the Asian industry. For each product group specialized departments are maintained in Bremen and overseas. These departments employ highly qualified personnel and work, within the framework of company rules, highly independently.
